“The Honolulu Festival started as more of a cultural exchange between Japan and Hawaii,” Honolulu Festival spokesperson Lenny Yajima explains. “The festival wanted to bring Japanese culture to the people of Hawaii who couldn’t necessarily go to Japan and experience things like the Daijayama, the fire-breathing dragon.”
